sym.bios.is is run by Thomas Hammer (Waveformer). This page explains what the site stores and why.
publicIf you just use the site
You can browse patches, download them and send them to your pedal without an account.
- Usage statistics. We use Google Analytics to count things like page views, downloads and which pedal model is connected. Google Analytics stores a random identifier in your browser to do that. We do not send your name or your email to Google Analytics.
- Error reports. When an operation fails, the site sends an anonymous diagnostic report so the bug can be fixed without asking you to debug it: the protocol bytes that failed, the pedal model and firmware, the app version, and a random session id. Reports never include your name, your email or your patches. If a file transfer fails, the report can carry a short fragment of it — at most 64 bytes. They go to Sentry, an error-tracking service on EU servers, which notes an approximate location (city level) from your connection; your IP address is not stored. You can turn error reports off at any time under Settings in the app.
- Patch and effect counters. When a patch is downloaded, previewed or sent to a pedal, or an effect is installed, that is counted so the site can show how much it is used. If you are not signed in, the count is tied to a random identifier stored in your browser, not to you.
- Patch videos. Some patches link to a demo video on YouTube. Nothing is loaded from YouTube until you click "Watch the demo"; the player then comes from YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode (youtube-nocookie.com), and YouTube's own privacy policy applies to what you watch there.
- On your own device. Backups of your pedal are saved to a folder you choose on your own computer, and the app also keeps its own copy in your browser's private storage so a backup is never lost if something fails midway. Your settings are kept in your browser too. None of it is uploaded to us, and clearing your browser's data for this site removes the browser's copies.
pianoYour pedal
The site talks to your pedal through your browser's MIDI support, with your permission. Patch data moves between your browser and your pedal. We do not receive your pedal's contents unless you choose to upload a patch.
personIf you create an account
- What we store: your email address, a username, an optional avatar address, and the patches you upload.
- Sign-in with Google: Google tells us your email address and basic profile information. We do not get your Google password.
- What is public: patches you upload, their names, descriptions and images, your username, and anything you post publicly such as reviews, comments and the ratings you give. Assume anything you upload or write can be seen and downloaded by anyone.
- What is not public: your email address.
- Activity: downloads, previews, stores, effect installs, votes and ratings are recorded with your account so the site can show usage counts and prevent double counting.
- Your collection: Patches and effects you save to your collection are stored with your account and are visible only to you. Deleting your account deletes your collection.
dnsWhere the data is kept
Accounts and patches are stored with Supabase on servers in Sweden, inside the EU. Analytics and error reports are processed by Google and Sentry, which may process data outside the EU.
deleteKeeping and deleting
Patches and account data are kept until you ask us to delete them. There is no delete button yet. Write to
sym@bios.is and your account and uploads will be removed. Deleting a patch removes it from the site, though people who already downloaded it keep their copy.
gavelYour rights
If you are in the EU or EEA, you can ask for a copy of your data, ask for it to be corrected, or ask for it to be deleted. Write to
sym@bios.is.
